UMUAHIA — The Abia State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned the suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze by the Abia State University (ABSU), describing the action as an act of intimidation, victimisation, and an assault on the fundamental right of a citizen to speak out against injustice and poor governance .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the APC, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary Uche Aguoru, said the suspension of a university professor simply because he raised concerns about the welfare of lecturers and made comments deemed “uncomplimentary” to Governor Alex Otti exposes an alarming level of intolerance towards dissent and constructive criticism .
CDA News Nigeria reports that the party questioned why Prof. Nwaeze should be punished for disclosing that a professor at ABSU reportedly takes home less than ₦400,000 monthly while professors in some other states earn approximately ₦1.4 million . The APC also raised concerns about the continued payment of lecturers under the 2009 salary structure while subjecting them to the 2024 tax regime, and the disclosure that some staff members are reportedly owed salaries for as long as 44 months .
The APC further stated that if the allegations were untrue, the appropriate response from a responsible government should be to provide the facts and demonstrate otherwise, not to suspend the professor who brought the issues to public consciousness .
The party called on the Abia State Government to immediately recall Professor Nwaeze, pay all outstanding salaries and allowances, address the use of obsolete salary structures, and stop the victimisation of civil servants who speak out on issues concerning workers’ welfare .
