ISUIKWUATO — The people of Amaise Autonomous Community, Umuobiala in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, have made an urgent appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Abia State Government for intervention to address a devastating gully erosion site that has threatened lives and property for over a decade.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the community’s plea follows NEMA’s recent inspection of erosion sites in Ebem Ohafia, which was reported by ABN TV. The Amaise community noted that the gully erosion in their area is even larger than the one in Ohafia and has existed for over 10 years, continuing to threaten lives, homes, farmlands, and access roads.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Isuikwuato LGA is known to be one of the areas in southeastern Nigeria most vulnerable to soil erosion. The gully erosion along the Okigwe-Isuikwuato highway, constructed on rugged terrain, has been a persistent environmental challenge. Studies have identified the region as having high soil erodibility due to a combination of steep slopes, high runoff, and vulnerable soil structure.
The community has expressed gratitude for the attention given to Ohafia but pleaded that their own crisis not be overlooked. “We plead for urgent government intervention to save our community from further devastation,” the appeal read. The people of Umuobiala stated they would be very grateful if their request receives timely government attention and intervention.
