APC Loses State Lawmaker to PDP in Zamfara

A member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Shamsuddeen Hassan Basko, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The defection of the lawmaker, who represents Maru North Constituency, was announced on the floor of the House on Thursday by the Speaker, coinciding with Governor Dauda Lawal’s presentation of the state’s 2026 budget proposal.

In his formal resignation letter addressed to the APC Chairman of Galadima Ward, Talata Mafara Local Government, Mr. Hassan cited persistent internal disagreements within the party as his reason for leaving.

“After careful reflection on activities, crises, divisions, and leadership challenges of the party from the local government to the state levels, I have decided to step away from active participation in the party,” the letter stated.

The lawmaker said the move was made in the interest of his constituents and aligned with his political convictions and development priorities. He expressed appreciation for the opportunities afforded him during his time in the APC.

Copies of the resignation letter, dated December 3, 2025, were also forwarded to the state and local government chairmen of the APC.

The defection marks a shift in the political landscape of Zamfara State, where the PDP currently holds the governorship.
