The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the campaign advertising charges introduced by the Abia State Structure for Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSSAA), describing the policy as unlawful, anti-democratic and an attempt to suppress opposition parties ahead of future elections.
According to CDA News Nigeria, the APC, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, faulted the agency’s advertising rates, which reportedly require presidential candidates to pay ₦200 million, governorship candidates ₦150 million, senatorial candidates ₦100 million, House of Representatives candidates ₦50 million, and State House of Assembly candidates ₦20 million to advertise their campaigns within Abia State.
The opposition party alleged that the charges would create financial barriers for candidates, limit political participation and undermine democratic competition. It also argued that the policy was inconsistent with the provisions of the Electoral Act regulating campaign spending.
The APC called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), relevant regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to intervene and ensure the immediate withdrawal of the policy. It maintained that public advertising spaces should remain accessible to all political parties under fair and transparent conditions.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the APC said it would pursue all lawful and constitutional means to challenge the policy, insisting that elections should be decided by voters rather than financial obstacles.
As of the time of filing this report, ABSSAA and the Abia State Government had not publicly responded to the APC’s allegations and demands.
