With Christmas just days away, Nigerians nationwide are enduring a triple crisis of worsening power outages, collapsing mobile networks, and unaffordable air travel, casting a shadow over festive celebrations.
Reports from major cities including Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, Ibadan, and Kano indicate that electricity supply has become more erratic, telecom services increasingly unreliable, and flight tickets to destinations like Owerri, Enugu, and Asaba now cost between ₦400,000 and ₦480,000.
The service collapse comes despite significant tariff increases earlier this year. Band A electricity customers, promised up to 22 hours of daily supply, now face prolonged blackouts. Telecom subscribers, who absorbed a 50% hike in call and data rates, report persistent network failures and dropped calls.
Kunle Olubiyo of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network described the power sector’s performance as a monumental failure 13 years after privatization. Deolu Ogunbanjo, President of the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers, called 2025 the worst year for service quality despite the price increase.
While regulators have vowed action, tangible improvements remain elusive, leaving millions frustrated during what should be a season of joy.
