PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA – A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as the Director-General of his 2027 campaign organization.
The APC leader, speaking at a political gathering in Port Harcourt over the weekend, argued that Wike’s political structure, grassroots appeal, and track record of delivering results make him the ideal candidate to steer the President’s reelection campaign. He noted that Wike’s influence across the South-South and beyond would be invaluable in securing a landslide victory.
“Wike is a political heavyweight. If President Tinubu wants to consolidate and expand his winning coalition, appointing Wike as campaign DG is the smartest move,” the chieftain stated.
The call comes amid ongoing realignments within the ruling party, with the Rivers APC faction aligned with Wike seeking greater recognition and inclusion in national campaign structures. The minister, a former governor of Rivers State, has maintained a close political relationship with the President since the 2023 elections.
Neither the Presidency nor Wike’s office has responded to the suggestion. Political analysts note that while such an appointment would signal a powerful alliance, it could also stir tensions within the APC’s existing campaign machinery.
