US President Donald Trump has announced plans for a large-scale prayer rally on Washington’s National Mall, aiming to “rededicate America as one nation under God.”
Speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, Trump invited Americans to gather on May 17, 2026, “to pray, to give thanks.” The event is slated for the iconic grassy expanse between the US Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial.
The President, who has long enjoyed support from the Christian right despite not being a regular churchgoer, claimed during his speech that he has “done more for religion than any other president.” He also stated, “I don’t know how a person of faith can vote for a Democrat.”
Trump, who describes himself as a “non-denominational Christian,” joked about his attendance at the annual breakfast, saying, “I need all the help I can get.” He also expressed increased optimism about his prospects for eternal salvation, commenting, “I really think I probably should make it.”
