A coalition of Christian and human rights organisations under the umbrella of the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN) has petitioned United States President Donald Trump, the US Congress and diplomatic missions over the planned retention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.
According to CDA News Nigeria, the coalition expressed concern that retaining the same ticket could heighten religious tensions and deepen political exclusion, particularly among Christian communities in Northern Nigeria.
In the petition, CYAN urged the international community to pay closer attention to the security situation affecting Christian communities across the country. The group argued that Nigeria’s religious diversity should be reflected in its political leadership to promote fairness and national unity.
The coalition also criticised the Federal Government’s policy of rehabilitating and reintegrating repentant terrorists, insisting that those involved in terrorism should face prosecution in accordance with the law.
CYAN further called on the United States to retain Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) until there are independently verified improvements in the protection of Christian communities. It also demanded transparent investigations into attacks in Plateau, Benue and other affected states, as well as continued humanitarian assistance for displaced victims.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the group also called for an investigation into alleged foreign influence in Nigeria’s political process while urging both domestic and international stakeholders to support fairness, inclusion and the protection of citizens regardless of their religious affiliation.
