Court Orders Arrest of Factional PDP Chairman Kabiru Turaki

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The political crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic legal turn as a Federal Capital Territory High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of factional national chairman, Kabiru Turaki.

Justice U.P. Kekemeke ordered Turaki’s arrest on Thursday after the embattled chieftain failed to appear before the court in a case filed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). The judge ruled that Turaki had no justification for his absence.

The IGP had filed a one-count charge against Turaki for allegedly providing false information to the police in a petition dated October 2022. The charge relates to claims made by Turaki regarding internal party matters.

Turaki, a senior lawyer and former Minister of Special Duties, has been leading a faction of the PDP in a protracted leadership battle with the party’s mainstream national working committee.

His legal team was not immediately available for comment following the ruling. The court has directed security agencies to effect the arrest and produce him at the next hearing.

The development adds to the mounting legal and political challenges facing the PDP as it prepares for its national convention scheduled for later this month.
