KINSHASA — The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed more than 2,000 lives, according to figures released Tuesday by Congolese health authorities .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the country has recorded 4,381 confirmed cases, including 2,011 deaths, with an overall case fatality rate of 45.9 percent . The outbreak, declared on May 15, is the DRC’s 17th surge of the disease and is already considered the largest in the country’s history . Cases have been reported in five provinces including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo, with Ituri remaining the epicentre .
CDA News Nigeria reports that insecurity due to armed groups and community mistrust have hampered the response. Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said the country has not yet reached the peak . UN Senior Ebola Coordinator Julien Harneis noted that half of the deaths occurred in the last 20 days . The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, although clinical trials are underway .
