A prominent political figure and former aide to the Abia State Governor, Chief Dr. Ugochukwu Godfrey Ugbo, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect, dealing a significant blow to the party’s structure in Ikwuano Local Government Area.
In a resignation letter dated March 15, 2026, and addressed to the Ward Chairman of the PDP in Ibere Ward 2, Ikwuano LGA, Dr. Ugbo — a respected stakeholder from the Ngwugwo Ibere Ancient Kingdom — cited the party’s seemingly endless internal crises, persistent litigations, and chronic lack of unity as the primary reasons behind his decisive departure.
“Due to the seemingly endless internal crises, persistent litigations, and the lack of unity within the party, I no longer feel confident in the direction and stability of the party as an institution,” Dr. Ugbo stated in his resignation letter.
Dr. Ugbo’s impressive political career within the PDP included serving as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) and Special Assistant (SA) to the Abia State Governor, SSA to the Ikwuano LGA Chairman, Secretary of Ikwuano LGA , Deputy Director of the Ikonne/Kikas Campaign Organisation, and Member of the PDP State Campaign Organisation — a portfolio that underscores the depth of experience and influence he brought to the party over the years.
Despite expressing gratitude for the relationships and opportunities gained during his years of membership, Dr. Ugbo made clear that his resignation was final and immediate — a decision he described as not taken lightly but made necessary by the party’s deteriorating internal condition.
His exit is the latest in a growing wave of defections and resignations rocking the PDP’s grassroots structure across Ikwuano LGA and Abia State, as the party continues to grapple with a leadership crisis that has alienated many of its most experienced and committed members.
Political watchers in Ikwuano say Dr. Ugbo’s resignation sends a powerful message to the PDP’s national and state leadership that urgent reconciliation and structural reforms are needed if the party hopes to remain a credible political force in the area ahead of 2027.
