MAKURDI, NIGERIA — Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the recent armed attack on Ocholonya village in Apa Local Government Area, which resulted in the death of two residents, the kidnapping of several others, and the destruction of property .
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, saw gunmen invade the community, shooting sporadically and causing panic among residents. According to the Ochonya Youth Leader, Comrade Godwin Ochepo, the assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire, killing two people identified as Terkimbi Ikwue and Eje Ochefu.
Several others were kidnapped during the assault, and livestock was rustled.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured affected communities of his administration’s commitment to their safety and the pursuit of justice.
“The Governor condemns this dastardly act and assures the people of Apa and the entire Benue State that his administration will not relent in its efforts to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are brought to book,” the statement read.
Governor Alia reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance policy for crime and criminality, pledging to intensify collaboration with security agencies to flush out criminal elements hiding in the state’s border communities . He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
The Governor further disclosed that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had been directed to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the affected communities and provide immediate relief to victims.
He urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, assuring them that security agencies are working tirelessly to track down the attackers and prevent future occurrences.
