Two police officers were killed while another sustained serious gunshot injuries following an attack by gunmen along the Obiri-Kwere axis of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the officers, attached to the Aluu Police Division in Ikwerre Local Government Area, were on a routine stop-and-search operation at a security checkpoint on the Mbodo/Aluu section of Obiri-Kwere Road when the assailants struck at about 9 p.m. on Monday.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the gunmen opened fire on the officers before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The injured officer was rushed to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
A video circulating on social media showed the bodies of the slain officers lying at the scene. A voice heard in the footage alleged that the attackers had carried out robbery operations in the area before turning their guns on the policemen.
The incident occurred barely 24 hours after the Rivers State Police Command announced the arrest of a suspected high-profile criminal, Austine Emenike, popularly known as “Oyibo,” who was reportedly linked to a wider criminal network.
Confirming the attack, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, said two officers lost their lives while another was injured.
She added that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, and members of the command’s management team visited the scene on Tuesday for an on-the-spot assessment, noting that investigations into the attack are ongoing.
