Health Alert: Abia Government Warns Residents to Avoid All Contact With Rodents Over Disease Risk

UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE — The Abia State Government has issued an urgent public health advisory, calling on all residents to avoid any form of contact with rodents, including rats and mice, as concerns over rodent-borne diseases continue to grow across the state.

The State Ministry of Health, which issued the advisory, warned that rodents are primary carriers of dangerous diseases such as Lassa fever — a viral haemorrhagic illness that spreads through contact with infected rodents or their droppings and can be fatal if not treated early.

Officials urged residents to keep homes and surroundings clean, store food in rodent-proof containers, seal up cracks and holes in buildings, and report any suspected cases of unusual fever or illness to the nearest health facility immediately.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to public health and pledged to deploy health workers across communities for sensitisation, surveillance, and early response as part of its ongoing disease prevention efforts.
