Grief and panic have descended on communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, as no fewer than 45 pupils were abducted during a Friday attack on three schools — Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School. Punch
The attackers stormed the communities in broad daylight, moving from one school to another while shooting sporadically as terrified pupils and teachers fled into nearby bushes for safety. Residents said the gunmen arrived around 9am on motorcycles shortly after schools had commenced morning activities.
An assistant headmaster identified as Mr. Adesiyan was killed during the attack, while an okada rider was also shot dead after reportedly resisting attempts by the assailants to seize his motorcycle.
Among those abducted was the Vice Principal of Community Grammar School, Mrs. Alamu Folawe. A teacher at the Baptist school said the attackers spoke Yoruba, Hausa, and Pidgin English.
Security agencies have since launched a massive manhunt, surrounding possible escape routes after the assailants fled into a nearby forest reserve bordering the Old Oyo National Park axis.
The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board described the attack as “a dark and painful moment” for the state’s education sector. Vanguard News
