Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and Rivers State political strongman, Nyesom Wike, has emphatically distanced himself from the ongoing controversy surrounding the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly aspirants screening exercise, flatly dismissing insinuations that he influenced the outcome of the process.
Wike, who has emerged as one of the most powerful political figures within the APC structure in Rivers State, made the remarks in response to growing allegations from aggrieved aspirants and political opponents who claimed his influence was responsible for the disqualification of certain candidates during the screening.
Speaking with characteristic boldness, the former Rivers State Governor declared that he had no hand in the screening decisions, using a colourful metaphor to drive home his point.
“I am not a native doctor. I don’t know who was screened or disqualified. Don’t come and drag my name into everything that happens in Rivers State,” Wike was quoted as saying.
His remarks come amid tensions within Rivers APC following the clearance of 33 aspirants and disqualification of 65 others, with several disqualified candidates reportedly pointing fingers at powerful political forces within the party as being responsible for their exclusion.
Political observers note that despite Wike’s denial, his significant influence over the APC structure in Rivers State means that his name will continue to feature prominently in conversations around the party’s internal processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
