The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a robbery attempt targeting its transmission substation in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, was successfully repelled by security guards on duty, in what officials are describing as a timely and courageous intervention that protected critical national power infrastructure.
According to a statement issued by the TCN, the guards on duty at the Ogbomoso substation engaged the armed intruders and successfully drove them away before they could cause any significant damage to the facility’s equipment or installations.
TCN management commended the security personnel for their alertness, bravery, and swift response, noting that the substation plays a critical role in the transmission of electricity to communities across the region, and any damage to it would have resulted in widespread and prolonged power outages.
The company assured Nigerians that it takes the security of its facilities across the country with utmost seriousness, adding that it is working closely with relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and prevent future attacks.
The attempted robbery is part of a troubling pattern of attacks on Nigeria’s power infrastructure, which experts say has contributed significantly to the country’s persistent electricity challenges, as vandals and criminals repeatedly target transmission lines, substations, and transformers for valuable metals and equipment.
Security analysts are calling on the Federal Government to deploy more robust protection measures, including armed military and police personnel, at critical power infrastructure sites across Nigeria.
