A Labour Party chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi, has sued the West African Examinations Council, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and the National Youth Service Corps over academic credentials attributed to NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Arabambi filed three separate suits at the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking orders compelling the institutions to release official records relating to certificates allegedly issued to Obi, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, 2011.
The suit against WAEC seeks a Certified True Copy of Certificate No. SC042560, allegedly issued to Obi Gregory Onwubuase in June 1978. The UNN suit seeks access to certificate registers and degree-award records tied to Certificate No. D000198, while the NYSC suit concerns Certificate No. 203495, allegedly issued to “Obi, Gregory Peter-Onwubuase” in May 1986.
Arabambi clarified that he was not asking the court to rule on the authenticity of the certificates, but to compel disclosure of existing official records for transparency purposes. His lawyer, Anderson Asemota, noted that WAEC had rejected the request citing FOI Act exemptions, while UNN and NYSC allegedly failed to respond entirely.
The plaintiff is seeking orders of mandamus compelling the institutions to verify and communicate their findings on the certificates’ particulars, including how the name “Peter-Onwubuase” appears in NYSC records.
No hearing date had been fixed as of the time of filing.
