NAFDAC Destroys Fake N939m Pharmaceutical Products in South-East

ENUGU, NIGERIA – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit pharmaceutical products worth N939 million in the South-East region, in a major crackdown on the circulation of fake drugs.

The destruction exercise, carried out at a dump site in Enugu on Friday, included expired, substandard, and falsified medicines seized from markets, warehouses, and smugglers across the five South-East states. Items destroyed ranged from antibiotics and antimalarials to controlled substances and banned products.

NAFDAC South-East Zonal Director, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, said the exercise was part of the agency’s sustained effort to rid the region of dangerous and counterfeit pharmaceuticals that pose serious health risks to the public.

“These products would have endangered lives if they had reached consumers. We will continue to pursue manufacturers and distributors of fake drugs,” Iluyomade stated.

The agency warned that it would intensify surveillance and clamp down on illegal drug markets. It also urged members of the public to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and report suspicious products to NAFDAC.
