YENAGOA, NIGERIA – The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has warned the Federal Government against splitting the pipeline surveillance contract currently held by Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, describing any attempt to divide the contract as a threat to peace and stability in the Niger Delta.
In a statement issued on Friday, the IYC expressed concern over reports that the government is considering awarding portions of the contract to other entities. The group insisted that Tompolo has effectively secured oil infrastructure and reduced crude oil theft since taking over the surveillance job.
“Tompolo has done exceptionally well. Any attempt to tamper with the contract will destabilize the region and undo the gains made in curbing oil theft,” the IYC said.
The group urged the Federal Government to disregard what it called “sponsored campaigns” against Tompolo and to retain the current arrangement.
The Federal Government has not officially responded to the IYC’s warning. The pipeline surveillance contract, awarded under the previous administration, has been credited with significantly reducing oil theft and boosting Nigeria’s crude oil production.
