National Grid Collapses Again, Plunging Nation into Darkness

ABUJA – The Nigerian national power grid has collapsed for the second time in 2026, resulting in a total system failure and widespread power outages across the country as of Tuesday morning, January 27.

Data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) showed that electricity generation plummeted from over 4,500 megawatts to zero, with all 23 connected power plants losing output. Consequently, all 11 electricity distribution companies received zero power allocation.

This marks the grid’s first collapse since a similar incident on Friday, January 23, and follows another major failure on December 29, 2025. While the exact cause of Tuesday’s collapse remains undetermined, historical factors include technical faults, inadequate maintenance of transmission lines, and fluctuations in generation capacity.

Officials confirmed that recovery operations are underway to restore power nationwide. The frequent grid failures continue to disrupt economic activities and household routines, highlighting persistent challenges in Nigeria’s power sector stability and infrastructure resilience.
