UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE — The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has recorded a leadership transition as Dr. Nkiruka Chidia Maduekwe officially assumed office as the new State Project Coordinator.
The handover ceremony, held on March 18, 2026, saw the outgoing Acting Project Coordinator, Onyenweaku Prince C., formally transfer leadership in the presence of staff and key stakeholders.
In his remarks, Onyenweaku expressed appreciation to the project team for their support during his tenure, noting that the programme had successfully navigated a transition phase and is now ready for full implementation.
He also commended Alex Otti for appointing Maduekwe, expressing confidence in her capacity to drive the project forward.
In her acceptance speech, Maduekwe described her appointment as a significant responsibility, pledging to lead with integrity, transparency, and teamwork.
She emphasized the need for innovative solutions to tackle erosion, climate change, and environmental challenges affecting communities across Abia State.
She further acknowledged the support of the Commissioner for Environment, Philmon Asonye Ogbonna, noting his role in providing direction for the project.
The NEWMAP initiative in Abia focuses on erosion control, watershed management, and building climate resilience in vulnerable communities.
