The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has announced that US and Canadian military aircraft will arrive at the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland for what it describes as “long-planned” defense activities.
In a statement on Monday, NORAD said the operations are part of routine, sustained efforts to defend North America and have been coordinated with Denmark, of which Greenland is an autonomous territory.
The move comes amid rising geopolitical tension after US President Donald Trump renewed calls for US control over Greenland and threatened tariffs against nations opposing his stance.
NORAD emphasized that the activities build on longstanding defense cooperation with Canada and Denmark, and involve operations from bases across North America.
The announcement follows Denmark’s proposal for NATO surveillance in Greenland to address emerging Arctic security concerns.
