Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has withdrawn his support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following the emergence of Rotimi Amaechi as the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election.
The ADC had announced Amaechi, a former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, as Atiku’s running mate.
Reacting in a statement on his X handle, Okonkwo said the decision perpetuates what he described as the continued marginalisation of the South-East, which has neither produced a President nor Vice President since 1999.
“The ADC was founded by Ralphs Nwosu from the South-East in 2005. He made the sacrifice to give up the party in 2025 for the coalition to usher in a better Nigeria. He couldn’t have made that sacrifice to marginalise his own people,” Okonkwo stated.
He added that the only favour he asked Atiku was to choose a running mate from the South-East, but if confirmed otherwise, he would not campaign for any ticket excluding the region.
