OpenAI to Unveil New AI Model After US Approval for Broader Release

OpenAI has announced that it will publicly launch its latest artificial intelligence model series, GPT-5.6, on Thursday after the United States government approved a broader rollout following an earlier limited release prompted by national security concerns.

CDA News Nigeria reports that the GPT-5.6 family comprises three models: Sol, the flagship model; Terra, designed for everyday tasks; and Luna, a faster, lower-cost option. The company said preview access had previously been restricted to a small group of trusted U.S.-based partners while additional safety evaluations were conducted.

According to reports, U.S. officials approved the wider release after technical testing and discussions with OpenAI regarding cybersecurity and national security implications. Advanced AI models have drawn increased scrutiny because of their ability to identify software vulnerabilities that could potentially be exploited if misused.

OpenAI said it is expanding preview access globally while continuing to work with U.S. authorities on a framework for future releases of advanced AI systems. The company has also maintained that long-term restrictions should not become the default approach for deploying new AI technologies.

The launch comes amid growing global competition in artificial intelligence, with leading technology companies racing to develop more capable and secure AI models for businesses, developers, and consumers.
