Calls for the removal of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, have intensified following the agency’s freezing of the Osun State Government account.
CDA News Nigeria reports that opposition parties and some Nigerians criticised the EFCC action, alleging that it was politically motivated because it came shortly before the August 15 governorship election in the state.
The Accord Party and New Nigeria People’s Party reportedly called on President Bola Tinubu to remove Olukoyede if he does not resign. Some groups also urged the EFCC chairman to leave office honourably.
The EFCC had ordered a Post No Debit restriction on the Osun State Government account domiciled with First Bank over what it described as suspicious transactions. The commission said its investigation into the account began in March 2026.
According to the EFCC, it has the power to restrict an account for up to 72 hours where reasonable suspicion exists.
However, President Tinubu later directed the commission to unfreeze the account. The President reportedly described the action as embarrassing.
The development triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the timing of the EFCC action.
Speaking on the matter, Accord Party National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem said the party had lost confidence in the EFCC leadership. He accused the commission of partisanship and demanded Olukoyede’s resignation.
The EFCC has maintained that its action was based on an investigation into suspicious transactions.
CDA News Nigeria will continue to monitor developments surrounding the controversy.
