ASABA, NIGERIA – The Delta State Police Command has dismissed viral social media claims branding the annual Ozoro festival a “rape festival,” while vowing to arraign any suspects found culpable of sexual assault during the cultural event.
Police spokesperson, CSP Bright Edafe, described the widespread characterization of the festival as “misleading and sensational,” stating that while isolated incidents of misconduct occurred, the narrative portraying the entire festival as a haven for sexual predators was untrue.
“The command has thoroughly investigated reports from the festival. While there were unfortunate cases, the claim that the festival is designed for rape is false and malicious,” Edafe said.
The police confirmed that arrests have been made in connection with reported sexual assaults during the festival, which holds annually in Ozoro community, Isoko North Local Government Area. Suspects will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.
Community leaders have also condemned the viral narrative, insisting that the festival is a cherished cultural heritage that promotes unity and tradition. They pledged to work with security agencies to ensure future editions are safe for all participants.
The Delta State Government has called for calm and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could incite ethnic tension or damage the reputation of the community.
