POLICE ARRAIGN BARUWA, DISMISS SHOOTING CLAIMS AT NURTW HQ

LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Nigeria Police Force has arraigned Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa, the reinstated President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), while dismissing reports of a shooting incident at the union’s national headquarters in Lagos.

Baruwa was arraigned before a Lagos magistrate court on Tuesday on charges related to alleged conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace following the union’s leadership tussle. He was granted bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has dismissed viral reports claiming that gunshots were fired at the NURTW secretariat during the takeover by Baruwa’s faction. Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin described the reports as “false and mischievous,” stating that officers deployed to the area maintained order throughout the process.

“There was no shooting or violence at the NURTW secretariat. Members of the public should disregard the fake news circulating on social media,” Hundeyin said.

Baruwa’s faction took control of the secretariat earlier this week following a court ruling that affirmed him as the duly elected president, unseating Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo). The leadership crisis has been a source of tension in the transport sector for months.

The police assured that normalcy has been restored and warned against the spread of misinformation capable of inciting unrest.
