Police Reportedly Detain Inspector in Enugu After Viral Video on Officers’ Welfare

The Nigeria Police Force has reportedly detained Inspector Ikwuje Samson at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Enugu on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after he spoke publicly in a viral video about welfare conditions in the Force.

CDA News Nigeria reports that, in the video interview, which circulated this week, the inspector said he joined the police in 2003 and has served for more than 23 years. He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in what he described as the hidden suffering of thousands of officers. He said he decided to speak despite knowing he could face disciplinary action, demotion, or confinement to the barracks.

“The condition of living within the police system is very, very bad,” he said.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that he also questioned whether funds meant for police welfare reach the officers who need them. Other reports quote him as saying that his salary cannot meet his needs, including his children’s school fees. These claims are his own and have not been independently verified.

Police regulations bar serving officers from criticising the Force publicly or speaking to the media without clearance. The reported detention has raised concerns about how officers who speak out on welfare are treated.

CDA News Nigeria could not independently confirm the detention. At the time of filing, the Force and the Enugu State Police Command had not issued an official statement on his whereabouts, the reasons for any detention, or whether he faces any disciplinary process.

CDA News Nigeria will update this story as more information emerges.
