PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA — The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced the screening of nine commissioner nominees forwarded by Governor Siminalayi Fubara for confirmation as members of the State Executive Council.
The nominees, believed to be the first batch of the governor’s new cabinet, were invited by the Clerk of the House, Dr Emeka Amadi, to submit 40 sets of their curriculum vitae, photocopies of credentials, and evidence of tax compliance as part of the screening requirements.
Those listed for consideration include Professor Datonye Alasia, Mr Tonye Bellgam, Professor Temple Nwofor, Dr Peters Nwagor, Mrs Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Mr Lekue Kenneth, Otonye Amachree, and Amairigha Edward Hart.
The development follows Governor Fubara’s dissolution of the State Executive Council last month amid the protracted political crisis between him and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The governor had also sacked eight commissioners who were not affected by the Supreme Court judgment recognising Martin Amaewhule as the authentic Speaker of the Assembly.
None of the previously sacked commissioners were included in the new list.
The submission of the list came after President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in February to broker peace between Fubara and Wike, which also led to the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy.
The Assembly has not yet specified the exact date for the screening exercise, but sources indicate that the process will be concluded in the coming days to enable the governor to reconstitute his cabinet and strengthen governance in the state.
