Senate Approves Electronic Transmission of Results, Drops ‘Real-Time’ Clause

The Senate on Tuesday approved the electronic transmission of election results but removed the “real-time” requirement from the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act, following a rowdy plenary session.

The amendment to Clause 60(3) was moved by the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North), and seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central). The clause now mandates presiding officers to electronically transmit results from polling units to the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV), but without the “real-time” specification.

The session grew tense when Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South) raised a point of order calling for a division, though he later withdrew it.

The revision is seen as a compromise amid ongoing public and legislative debate over transparency and logistics in Nigeria’s electoral process.
