ENUGU – The Enugu State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, has arrested a woman identified as Mrs. Ogechi John for the alleged murder of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John.The suspect, an indigene of Ebonyi State, was apprehended on Monday morning following the tragic incident at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene.
According to reports, neighbors witnessed the child being severely beaten around 3:00 PM on Sunday.
Residents further alleged that the young girl had been a victim of repeated maltreatment and abuse by the suspect prior to her death.Reacting to the development, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, condemned the act in its entirety.
She emphasized that the Governor Peter Mbah administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward child abuse and homicide.
“Immediately we received information about the incident, we moved swiftly to ensure the suspect was arrested,” Enih stated, vowing that the government would pursue a thorough and expedited investigation to ensure justice is served.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
