Tragic Accident at Rumuokoro Flyover Claims Lives, Disrupts Commuters

PORT HARCOURT — A devastating road accident occurred at the Rumuokoro Flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, leaving commuters stranded and raising fresh concerns about road safety in the area .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the incident caused severe traffic congestion along the busy Rumuokoro-Rumuosi axis, with hundreds of commuters left waiting for hours as commercial drivers withdrew their services in protest . The protest stemmed from allegations that a commercial driver was killed by task force officials during a dispute over vehicle impoundment .

CDA News Nigeria reports that the Rumuokoro flyover has been a recurrent scene of tragic incidents. In a similar occurrence, three members of a family returning from crossover night prayers lost their lives on January 1, 2026, when their vehicle rammed into a stationary sewage truck parked on the flyover .

The accident also involved a University of Port Harcourt shuttle bus that collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the death of a UNIPORT student, an infant, and another individual . The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that overspeeding was the cause of the crash, with eyewitnesses noting the driver lost control and rammed into a parked vehicle .

Families of the victims have called on the Rivers State Government to investigate the matter, blaming the indiscriminate parking of vehicles on the flyover for the recurring accidents . The police have since commenced an investigation into the incident .
