Tension gripped Rukpokwu community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State after two women were apprehended for allegedly attempting to kidnap a six-month-old baby.
According to the child’s mother, she had briefly stepped out to buy food, leaving the infant in the care of her two sons. Upon her return, her eldest son informed her that two unfamiliar women had entered their room.
Moments later, the mother discovered her baby was missing and immediately raised an alarm. A resident reportedly alerted her that two women had been seen carrying a baby towards a waiting motorcycle.
The alarm prompted swift action from community members, who mobilized and intercepted the suspects before they could flee. The baby was rescued unharmed, while the two women were apprehended and handed over for further investigation.
The incident has heightened concerns over child safety in the area, with residents calling on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law.
