In a dramatic escalation of tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump announced early Saturday that the United States has conducted a large-scale military strike against Venezuela, resulting in the capture and removal of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from the country.
The announcement came after multiple explosions rocked Caracas and surrounding areas, with CNN teams on the ground reporting power outages, fires, and low-flying aircraft. Venezuelan authorities accused the U.S. of “military aggression” and declared a state of emergency.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said:
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country.”
Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López confirmed that urban areas were hit and vowed to resist what he called an “invasion.”
International reactions have been swift. Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for an immediate UN meeting, while Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel condemned the attack as “criminal.”
The U.S. military has been amassing forces in the Caribbean for months, and Trump has repeatedly warned of action against alleged drug trafficking networks in Venezuela.
