US Orders Immediate Departure of Citizens from Mali Amid Security Crisis

The United States has issued an urgent warning for all American citizens in Mali to leave the country immediately.

This directive comes as a severe fuel blockade by jihadist groups makes daily life increasingly dangerous and unpredictable.

Al-Qaeda-linked fighters have been attacking fuel tankers, causing major shortages and isolating the capital city, Bamako. The U.S. Embassy stated that the situation is unstable, pointing to fuel disruptions, the closure of schools, and ongoing armed conflict near the city.

While the Bamako airport remains open for departures, the embassy warned that overland travel is not safe due to terrorist attacks on highways. The U.S. had previously authorized the departure of government staff and issued a strict “do not travel” advisory for Mali.

Mali has been struggling with violence for over a decade and is currently ruled by a military junta.
