ADC Primary Crisis Deepens: Amaechi Rejects Presidential Primary Results, Throws Party Into Fresh Turmoil

The crisis engulfing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary has escalated dramatically as former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, formally rejected the results of the primary — throwing the party into fresh and dangerous turmoil just as it was positioning itself as a credible opposition platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi’s rejection of the primary results follows a similar boycott by fellow aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who earlier refused to attend the result announcement ceremony over allegations of widespread vote rigging and personally observed irregularities — creating a perfect storm of credibility crisis for the ADC leadership.

The former minister, in rejecting the outcome, dealt a severe blow to the legitimacy of the entire primary process — particularly damaging given that Amaechi had earlier shown strong performance in states like Bayelsa, where he defeated both Atiku and Hayatu-Deen, demonstrating genuine grassroots delegate support.

With both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen now rejecting the results, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar — who was reportedly leading the collation with wins in at least five states — faces the uncomfortable prospect of being declared the ADC presidential candidate amid loud and credible protests from his two main rivals.

Political analysts describe the situation as a catastrophic own goal for the ADC, warning that a fractured and disputed primary outcome could permanently damage the party’s image, deter potential supporters, and hand the ruling APC a significant propaganda victory ahead of 2027.

“The opposition continues to shoot itself in the foot at the very moment Nigerians are desperate for a credible alternative,” one senior political analyst told CDA News Nigeria.

The ADC National Working Committee is now under intense pressure to respond transparently and decisively to the mounting allegations — with calls growing for an independent review of the primary process, state-by-state result verification, and a formal hearing of grievances from all aggrieved aspirants before any candidate is officially declared.

Civil society groups monitoring the primary have warned that failure to address the crisis credibly could permanently undermine the ADC’s viability as a serious political platform ahead of Nigeria’s most consequential election cycle in recent memory.

Amaechi’s camp is expected to formally outline the specific grounds for his rejection in a detailed statement, while the ADC leadership has yet to issue an official response to the growing revolt at the time of filing this report.
