…Says N127.4bn Loan Balance Still Outstanding, Disputes N75bn Savings Claim
The Anambra State Government has released detailed loan records in a bid to substantiate its claim that former Governor Peter Obi left behind unpaid debts, escalating a bitter dispute as the 2027 presidential election gathers momentum.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, said the state is still servicing eight external loans obtained during Obi’s tenure, with an outstanding balance of N127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026, based on the Debt Management Office’s latest report.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the government placed the original value of the loans at $123.77 million, contracted between 2007 and 2013 for projects including malaria control, erosion management, healthcare, education, and agricultural value-chain development.
Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, has vehemently denied the claims, insisting his administration cleared over N35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears and left no outstanding salaries, pensions, or contractor liabilities. He specifically disputed the N2 billion ecological fund claim, saying the money was left untouched in a First Bank account with a balance exceeding N2.13 billion .
The government countered that a certified statement of the account, from its opening in 2011, showed no such amount was ever held, describing it as an Internally Generated Revenue account rather than an ecological fund account. Mefor also alleged that legacy salary arrears owed to defunct Water Corporation staff and primary school teachers remain unresolved
Obi has challenged anyone with evidence to the contrary to come forward, vowing to stop campaigning if his claims are disproven . The Presidency, through Bayo Onanuga, has since dared him to honour that pledge .
