GBOKO – Commercial motorcycle riders grounded social and economic activities in Benue State’s Gboko town on Friday to protest the murder of four colleagues by armed assailants.
The protesters, who began their demonstration as early as 6 am, formed long convoys and lit bonfires at strategic locations while singing war songs, though the protest remained peaceful throughout.
A protest leader, who preferred anonymity, explained their action: “Last night, they killed about four of our members and took away their bikes. This business is our only means of feeding our families. Many of us are graduates with no jobs.”
Gboko Local Government Chairman Torseer Yina condemned the attacks and assured protesters that security measures were being implemented to protect okada riders and apprehend the perpetrators.
Police confirmed that calm had returned to the town and investigations into the murders had commenced.
