ENUGU — The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and paraded 14 suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate allegedly linked to multiple abduction operations and a murder case across the state and beyond .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Command headquarters, GRA, Enugu, on Thursday. The suspects were arrested through intelligence-led operations conducted across several states . The operations also led to the recovery of five AK-47 rifles, two pump-action guns, one locally fabricated firearm, 310 rounds of live ammunition, eight cartridges, and seven empty AK-47 magazines .
CDA News Nigeria reports that two of the suspects were involved in the August 2 kidnapping of worshippers at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area. They fled to Port Harcourt but were traced and arrested . After fleeing Enugu, the suspects regrouped with their associates in Port Harcourt and kidnapped another victim, who was released after a N5 million ransom was paid .
The CP said the suspects, members of an organised criminal network, confessed to several kidnappings along the Enugu-Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka Road, Obioma-9th Mile-Umulumgbe-Ukpatu axis, Eke-Affa-Egede-Ezinze axis, and other locations in Ezeagu Local Government Area . Preliminary investigations have linked the gang to multiple incidents, including the abduction of a man in Ezeagu on May 25 for a N5.5 million ransom, the abduction of two men and the murder of a woman in Udi on May 9 for $28,700, and the kidnapping of seven victims in Ezeagu on April 12 for N25 million .
Investigations further revealed that proceeds from the criminal activities were laundered through investments in livestock and properties, lavish spending, and overseas trips .
