Women from Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State have staged a protest against the growing presence of sex workers in their community, accusing them of interfering with their husbands and sons.
The protesters, who took to the streets on Friday, carried placards and chanted slogans demanding immediate action from local authorities to address the situation. They alleged that the influx of commercial sex workers had destabilised family units and posed a moral threat to the younger generation.
“We can no longer keep quiet while our marriages and homes are being destroyed,” one of the protesters told Arise TV. “These women are luring our husbands and corrupting our sons. We want the government to intervene.”
The women called on the state government and traditional leaders to enforce stricter regulations on hospitality businesses and nightspots they accused of harbouring the sex workers.
Community leaders have appealed for calm, urging dialogue rather than confrontation. The Enugu State Government has yet to issue an official response to the protest.
Social commentators have noted that economic hardship and unemployment remain underlying factors driving young women into commercial sex work across Nigeria.
