Former Abia State gubernatorial aspirant, Mascot Uzor Kalu, has formally withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary race in a letter dated May 20, 2026, addressed to the APC National Chairman through the Abia State Chairman of the party.
In the letter, Mascot cited extensive consultations with family members, friends, and critical stakeholders across the state as forming the basis for his difficult but necessary decision.
“Although the decision was difficult, it became necessary in the interest of fairness, equity, and the unity of the party in Abia State,” Mascot stated in the letter.
A major factor influencing his exit, he explained, was the emergence of his brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as the APC senatorial candidate for Abia State. Mascot noted that stepping down would create room for other aspirants to freely contest the governorship position, avoiding a perception of family dominance over the party’s ticket.
The withdrawal is seen as a significant political gesture aimed at strengthening internal cohesion within the Abia APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the development further reshapes the Abia APC governorship landscape, with the field now open for remaining aspirants to consolidate their campaigns.
