Prof. Ursula Akanwa Makes History as First Female Vice Chancellor of MOUA

In a historic development, Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa has been announced as the new Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), becoming the first female to occupy the position since the institution’s establishment.

Prof. Akanwa’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the university’s history, breaking the gender barrier in the top leadership position of the federal institution. Her emergence is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the administration of the university, which has recently been in the spotlight over governance issues.

The appointment comes at a critical time for MOUAU, following recent controversies surrounding the suspended 2025 convocation ceremony and the delayed professorial promotion of some staff members. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the new VC navigates these challenges and steers the institution toward greater academic excellence.

As the first female Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akanwa’s tenure is anticipated to inspire more gender inclusivity in university administration and promote policies that support female academics and students.

Details of her vision and priorities for the university are expected to be unveiled in the coming days as she assumes duty.
