Abuja, Nigeria — No fewer than 20,000 Nigerian health workers have reportedly been recruited by developed countries in recent years, raising fresh concerns over the growing brain drain affecting Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
CDA News Nigeria gathered from reports that health experts and stakeholders expressed concern over the increasing migration of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other medical professionals seeking better remuneration, improved working conditions, and enhanced career opportunities abroad.
The migration trend has continued to put pressure on Nigeria’s healthcare system, with many public hospitals struggling with shortages of skilled personnel. Medical associations have repeatedly urged governments at all levels to improve welfare packages, provide modern medical facilities, and create a more conducive working environment to retain healthcare professionals.
“The continued migration of healthcare workers is a major challenge that requires urgent policy interventions to strengthen the nation’s health system and improve staff welfare,” a health sector stakeholder said.
CDA News Nigeria reports that stakeholders are calling for comprehensive reforms, including better funding of the health sector, competitive salaries, improved working conditions, and expanded opportunities for professional development to reduce the exodus of medical personnel.
Analysts warn that unless decisive measures are implemented, the continued loss of skilled health workers could further weaken healthcare delivery and reduce access to quality medical services across the country.
