Abuja, Nigeria — The Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish a comprehensive legal framework for the management, coordination and accountability of foreign aid received by Nigeria.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the proposed legislation is aimed at improving transparency, efficiency and oversight in the administration of grants, donations and development assistance provided by international partners.
Leading the debate on the bill, lawmakers said the proposed framework would strengthen the coordination of foreign-funded projects, eliminate duplication and ensure that aid resources are effectively utilized for national development.
“The bill seeks to promote transparency, accountability and effective coordination in the management of foreign aid received by Nigeria,” a lawmaker said during the debate.
Several senators supported the proposal, arguing that a robust legal framework would enhance public confidence, improve donor coordination and ensure that development assistance delivers measurable benefits to citizens.
Following its successful second reading, the bill was referred to the appropriate Senate committee for further legislative scrutiny and public hearing. The committee is expected to submit its report to the Senate before the bill proceeds to the next stage of the legislative process.
If eventually passed by the National Assembly and assented to by the President, the legislation is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign aid management system and promote greater accountability in the use of donor funds.
