The Secretary-General of the Southeast Young Leaders Consultative Forum (SYLCF), Ms. Tina Odor, has expressed concern over what she described as the growing politicisation of the media in the Southeast, warning that journalism is gradually losing its professionalism and credibility.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Odor lamented that many media outlets and bloggers have become mouthpieces of political parties, engaging in media tantrums and unnecessary confrontations instead of promoting balanced, factual and responsible reporting.
She particularly condemned what she described as sustained attacks by some Abia-based bloggers against the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, saying such actions undermine the ethics of journalism and contribute to political tension.
According to her, the media should remain a platform for truth, accountability and public enlightenment rather than an instrument for political propaganda, personal attacks and misinformation.
Odor urged journalists, bloggers and media practitioners to uphold the core values of fairness, accuracy, objectivity and professionalism in their reportage, stressing that credible journalism is essential to strengthening democracy and promoting peace in the region.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that she also called on media professionals across the Southeast to embrace genuine reportage, shun acrimony and avoid using their platforms to fuel unnecessary political conflicts.
