MARRAKECH – President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles for their impressive 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday, January 10.
Nigeria secured their semi-final berth with a dominant performance at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, ending Algeria’s strong defensive record in the tournament. The Desert Foxes had conceded only one goal before the match.
President Tinubu took to social media shortly after the final whistle to express his support, writing: “Brilliant performance… inspiring. Go, Super Eagles! You have the support of all Nigerians,” alongside the hashtags #Naija4TheWin and #AFCON2025.
After a goalless first half, Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 47th minute with a powerful header. Ten minutes later, Akor Adams doubled the lead following an assist from Osimhen. Nigeria controlled the match throughout, preventing Algeria from registering a single shot on target.
Osimhen thanked Nigerian fans after the match, saying, “Thank you so much for your support worldwide. We will continue to build on this momentum and hopefully get to the final and win it.”
The win sets up a high-stakes semi-final clash between Nigeria and tournament hosts Morocco. With morale high and attacking form evident, the Super Eagles are now strong contenders for a fourth AFCON title.
