Tragedy Strikes Super Eagles: Striker Samuel Chukwueze Loses Mother to Brief Illness

The Nigerian football community has been hit by a second tragedy in one week as Super Eagles and Fulham FC forward, Samuel Chukwueze, has lost his mother following a brief illness.

The sad news was announced on Wednesday by the player’s brother, David Chukwueze, who shared emotional messages on his Instagram story mourning their mother. In his posts, he wrote, ‘My forever love just left me without saying goodbye’ and ‘You didn’t even carry your grandchild,’ expressing the family’s profound grief.

Samuel Chukwueze, who was part of the Super Eagles squad that secured a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, is yet to make a public statement. This loss comes just days after the team’s captain, Wilfred Ndidi, lost his father in a road accident in Delta State.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has also issued a statement mourning the passing of Chukwueze’s mother and extending condolences to the player and his family during this difficult period. The back-to-back personal tragedies have cast a shadow over the national team, with fans and fellow players rallying to offer support to both stars.

As the football world mourns with him, Chukwueze is expected to take time away from club duties with Fulham to be with his family in Nigeria.
