The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned state governors against allowing the increased revenue from fuel subsidy removal to overshadow prudent governance.
Speaking at a media parley in Port Harcourt on Monday, Wike reflected on the financial changes in governance, noting that many states now have access to unprecedented funds.
“You have to be careful. Money can make you not to see well,” Wike warned. “Most of them now think everything is about money.”
He contrasted current financial inflows with his experience as Rivers State governor, stating, “All my life as governor for eight years, I never received such revenue.”
Wike credited President Bola Tinubu’s bold decision to remove the subsidy for making more funds available to states, leading to some states budgeting over one trillion naira. However, he emphasized that money has its limits.
“Money has its own limitation… It’s not everything that you think money will work for,” he said.
He expressed concern that the focus on financial gain is replacing a commitment to service delivery and urged politicians to prioritize goodwill and careful planning over the mere accumulation and expenditure of funds.
