ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognised the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, listing Abdulrahman Mohammed as the party’s National Chairman on its official website.
The recognition follows a national convention held on Sunday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium velodrome in Abuja, where over 2,000 delegates elected a full slate of National Working Committee (NWC) members.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu was returned as National Secretary.
The move has deepened the party’s leadership crisis, as a rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki had approached the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the Wike-backed group from holding the convention.
The Turaki faction has boycotted the exercise, describing it as unconstitutional.
Addressing delegates at the convention, Wike declared that the PDP had overcome a protracted leadership crisis, saying the party had been “returned to its rightful owners — the people”.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-governors Ayodele Fayose, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Samuel Ortom were among those in attendance.
With INEC’s latest position, the balance of power tilts further in favour of the Wike-aligned bloc, even as reconciliation efforts face significant hurdles ahead of the 2027 elections.
